Using Nature to Help Support & Sustain
Your Wellbeing…

We cultivate an appreciation for the wellness benefits of gardening and nature. By engaging in gardening activities and connecting with the natural world, we enhance our clients’ physical, emotional, social and mental well-being.
“We use gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people in all avenues of life. From children at school to the corporate world, social and therapeutic horticulture helps you achieve your wellness goals.”

We Utilise Gardening & Outdoor Spaces To Achieve Your Wellness Goals

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) is the use of gardening and plant-based activities to improve people's physical and mental well-being, social skills and overall quality of life. It’s used as a structured, therapeutic approach that helps individuals engage with nature in a meaningful way.

Who Benefits From Social Therapeutic Horticulture

Our Social And Therapeutic Horticulture Approach Puts Your Mental Wellbeing Front & Center Of Everything We Do

The beautiful thing about Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) is that it’s universally beneficial and will benefit everyone. It can be adapted to accommodate people of any age or ability. Gardening for the mind has found it especially beneficial for three specific settings – people working in the corporate world, people living in residential settings and children’s educational settings.

Social Collaboration Benefits

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) offers a wide range of benefits for people with physical disabilities or chronic illness, individuals with dementia or cognitive decline, and older adults in various care settings. For those with physical challenges, gardening provides gentle, low-impact physical activity that supports strength and mobility.

Corporate Benefits

People in the corporate world can benefit significantly from Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH), as a way to counterbalance the pressures of fast-paced, screen-heavy work environments. Engaging in gardening activities offers a powerful form of stress relief, encouraging mindfulness and creative thinking. It provides a welcome break from digital overload and high-pressure routines.

Educational Benefits

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) offers a wide range of benefits for all children in education. It provides a hands-on, engaging way to learn, helping children connect with nature, understand science and develop curiosity about the world around them. Gardening activities encourage responsibility, patience, and problem-solving, as children care for living things over time.

The Story Behind Gardening For The Mind

As the founder of Gardening For The Mind, Shane combines expertise and passion as a Social and Therapeutic Horticulture Facilitator. After studying horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, he began his journey as Head Gardener at Lis na Carrig estate in 2011. His work transcends traditional gardening, integrating horticultural knowledge with a commitment to wellbeing. He was instrumental in establishing Aventine Gardens in 2020, a space devoted to nature’s restorative power, and founded Gardening for the Mind in 2021, where he conducts workshops that help individuals realize their potential through mindful, hands-on experiences in nature.

Shane fosters environments that encourage people to reconnect with nature, themselves, and each other. With a passion for horticulture and personal development, he blends ecological care with emotional wellbeing, employing coaching and therapeutic insights to guide individuals toward growth and self-discovery.

Shane holds a B.Sc. in Horticulture, QQI Level 6 qualifications in Life Coaching and Counselling, and is furthering his studies in Psychotherapy to maintain a holistic, informed approach. In addition to his work, he is a passionate beekeeper, camogie coach, and lifelong badminton player.

Our Core Values Help Define Everything We Do

Shane’s core values at Gardeing for the Mind are clear: to create a space where nature and emotional wellbeing grow side by side. Shane is guided by values that centre around care, connection and purpose. Compassion lies at the heart of his work, along with patience and a deep respect for both people and the natural world. He believes in creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where everyone—regardless of background or ability—can feel seen, supported, and valued. Empowerment is a key part of his approach, helping individuals build confidence and a sense of agency through hands-on experiences in nature.

Mindfulness and presence are gently woven into the work, encouraging people to slow down and reflect. With a strong commitment to sustainability, he also promotes eco-friendly practices, teaching others to care for the environment as part of nurturing their own wellbeing. Above all, he understands the power of connection—between people, with nature and within ourselves.
